Settings and your workspace

Open Settings with the gear button in the tab strip. The panel slides in from the side and is where you manage your tabs, appearance, backups, and agent sharing. Press Escape or click outside the panel to close it.

The Tabs section lists every tab, including hidden ones, with three controls each:

  • Reorder: drag the handle on the left to change the order tabs appear in the strip.
  • Hide or show: the eye button removes a tab from the strip without deleting its note, or brings it back. Hiding the tab you are currently on moves you to another visible tab so the editor always shows something.
  • Delete: the trash button removes a tab and its note after a confirmation prompt. You cannot delete your only tab.
  • Share: the lightning-bolt button marks a tab to share with an AI agent. See Sharing notes with an AI agent.

In the Appearance section, pick Auto, Light, or Dark. Auto follows your operating system’s light or dark setting and switches live when that changes.

The Backup section moves all your notes in and out of a single file:

  • Export to file downloads every tab and note as one JSON file, named with today’s date.
  • Import from file loads a backup you exported earlier. Because importing replaces everything currently stored, you are asked to confirm first. The confirmation shows how many tabs and notes the backup holds and when it was exported. Files that are not Notes Tab backups, or that are malformed, are rejected with a message.

Export and Import are also how you move your notes to another browser or machine, since notes are stored locally and not synced to an account.

The bottom of the panel shows the installed Notes Tab version. Store builds stop here; builds on the beta channel also show a beta-update section when a newer build is available (see Installing and updating Notes Tab).
